Dr Kugathasan is a Marcus Professor of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Human Genetics at Emory University. He serves as the Medical Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where his clinical focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric IBD. Dr. Kugathasan’s research focus is on pathogenesis of (IBD) in children, in particular in genomic, microbial and transcriptomic determinants in IBD that would eventually lead to precision medicine in IBD. A secondary related focus involves clinical trials with novel therapies in pediatric IBD. Dr. Kugathasan leads nationwide, multi-center research efforts funded by CCFA and NIH. A successful pediatric Gastroenterologist lovingly known as “Dr.K” to his patients, he has treated 1000’s of patients with severe IBD, many comes from nationally and even internationally to seek help. Recognizing his services to the IBD patients’ community he was awarded the physician of the year award from Cohn’s and Colitis foundation in 2014. Apart from his clinical work he has been a stalwart researcher with an intangible contribution to current and future research in the treatment of IBD. He has numerous achievements to his illustrious career, to name a few, published over 140 original articles in internationally renowned journals such as Nature and Lancet, recipient of NIH and foundation grants amounting to more than 30 million dollars, serves on the advisory boards of various pharmaceutical companies and federal regulatory agencies like FDA, frequent international guest speaker, recipient of the prestigious young clinical investigator award from the society of North American Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition (NASPGHAN) and the physician investigator award from American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR).
